What Defunding the Police Really Means
What Defunding the Police Really Means
We know that police don't keep us safe -- and as long as we continue to pump money into our corrupt criminal justice system at the expense of housing, health, and education investments -- we will never be truly safe. That's why we are calling to #DefundPolice and #InvestInCommunities -- and in our new video, Black Lives Matter Managing Director Kailee Scales helps break down just how it works.

#SayHerName: The Mothers of the Movement
#SayHerName: The Mothers of the Movement
In honor of the nation-wide #SayHerName Week of Action (June 11th-17th), AAPF has joined BYP 100 and numerous racial justice and gender justice organizations in uplifting the stories of Black women, girls and femmes who have been victimized by state violence, and demanding justice for them and their families. This video, the first in a series of three, lifts up the voices of mothers who have lost their daughters to police violence. The #SayHerName Mothers Network was first officially convened by AAPF in November 2016, a year and a half after many of the mothers joined us in New York City to launch the Say Her Name Report and attend the first ever #SayHerName Vigil in Union Square. Since then, the #SayHerName Mothers Network has joined together on a number of occasions, marching at the Women’s March on Washington, lobbying for police reform on Capitol Hill, and joining together for several focus groups and planning sessions to strategize around the initiative and to assess the needs of new family members who’ve lost their daughters to police violence. This video is dedicated to Vicky Coles-McAdory, aunty-mama of India Beaty and one of the original members of the #SayHerName Family Network, who tragically died of a stroke last September. Learn more about the campaign by visiting our website (aapf.org) and social media pages (@aapolicyforum). #SayHerName

DC Resident Describes Experience with Police - DC Native
DC residents actively working for police reform in the District of Columbia have been trying to get the DC City Council to hold a hearing that would allow their fellow residents to testify about their experience with the police. The good news is the DC Council’s Judiciary Committee is holding an Oversight Roundtable on policing for next Thursday, July 12th. The bad news is that event was announced less than a week ago, giving activists very little time to get the word out to those who might like to testify. Fortunately, Grassroots DC managed to capture some testimony on our own. Footage was shot by Just Jones, Josh the Girl and Liane Scott. It was edited by Miheema Goodine and Liane Scott. Information about the roundtable and how to participate follows:: Councilmember Charles Allen, Chairperson Committee on the Judiciary & Public Safety Announces a Public Oversight Roundtable on Policing and Public Safety In Wards 7 and 8 Thursday, July 12, 2018 9:30 a.m. Room 412, John A. Wilson Building 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. Washington, D.C. 20004 Reconvening at 5:00 p.m. Deanwood Recreation Center 1350 49th Street, N.E. Washington, D.C. 20019 The Committee seeks testimony from residents on topics related to policing and public safety, to include community policing; stops and frisks; the use of force; de-escalation strategies; gun recovery tactics; policing public space; and police presence in the community. Government witnesses will be heard in the morning session, and public witnesses are welcome at both the morning and evening sessions. Anyone wishing to testify at the roundtable should contact the Committee via email at [email protected] or at (202) 724-7808, and provide their name, telephone number, organizational affiliation, and title (if any), by close of business Tuesday, July 10. Public witnesses who do not wish to be featured on camera can have their names and likenesses obscured, and they should so indicate when registering.

Unchained Memories!!! (Readings From The Slave Narratives)!!!
Unchained Memories!!! (Readings From The Slave Narratives)!!!
Unchained Memories is a 2003 documentary film about the stories of former slaves interviewed during the 1930s as part of the Federal Writers' Project and preserved in the WPA Slave Narrative Collection. This HBO film interpretation directed by Ed Bell and Thomas Lennon is a compilation of slave narratives, narrated by actors, emulating the original conversation with the interviewer. The slave narratives may be the most accurate in terms of the everyday activities of the enslaved, serving as personal memoirs of more than two thousand former slaves. The documentary depicts the emotions of the slaves and what they endured. The "Master" had the opportunity to sell, trade, or kill the enslaved, for retribution should one slave not obey. ============================================= TWITTER: https://twitter.com/MybrandkJ YOUTUBE: https://tinyurl.com/karonaj FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/LearningTeachingEarning/ FANDANGO: http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-8509658-10507293 Join Prime Video Channels Free Trial: https://amzn.to/33ItqIT Try Audible and Get Two Free Audiobooks: https://amzn.to/2z2q05X AmazonFresh Free Trial: https://amzn.to/31MnGw5 ===================================================== LIKE SHARE &SUBSCRIBE!!!
